The August Smart Lock is the best smart locks home for renters since it's easy to install on top of an existing deadlock without having to replace the cylinder or key. There's no need to replace the cylinder; it'll function with your current keys and keep your landlord happy. When you leave, you can effortlessly remove the lock for doors and replace it with the old one, ensuring that your deposit is safe.

If you want to manage and monitor the lock for doors remotely, you'll also need the August Connect module (around $60, offered separately). Because the module can handle several locks, it's a wonderful low-cost option for controlling multiple doors at once. The only thing lacking is Apple HomeKit support.

While smart lock for doors make it simple to unlock and lock your door with a smartphone or keypad, there are occasions when you just need a regular key. If you own a rental property, though, this can be a problem if you're concerned that someone has produced many copies.

That's why we like the Kwikset Halo; it has a rekeyable lock, which was dead simple to use. Plus, this lock connects directly to your Wi-Fi network, is compatible with both Alexa and Google Assistant, and has some good theft-deterrent features built into its touchscreen. The Kwikset Halo is available in four finishes (Iron Black, Polished Chrome, Satin Nickel, and Venetian Bronze). You can also get it with a touchscreen or with a physical, backlit keypad; the latter is less expensive by about $50.

When choosing a smart lock, what to look for 

There are a few things to think about while looking for a smart lock for doors.

Smart locks are available in two styles: deadbolt and lever-style. The former is intended to replace your existing deadbolt, and the latter combines the lock and door-opening lever into one unit. The most common type of lock is the deadbolt, however lever locks are becoming more popular.

Design: Your smart lock should match the rest of your house. The majority of locks come in a number of types and finishes, including brass, silver, and bronze.

Security: Smart locks come with one or more entry options, so you may choose which you prefer.

• Some smart locks have a classic keyhole, just like a traditional lock. Some can even be re-keyed to make the move easier.
  
  
• Most smart locks will allow you to create and manage dozens, if not hundreds, of keycodes.
  
  
• Virtual keys: You can send a virtual code to people who can then unlock your door using the smart lock app on their phone. You have control over how long these codes are live.

Connectivity: A smart lock must be connected to your home network in order to be controlled and monitored remotely. This can be accomplished in a number of ways. The most common radios included into smart locks are Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Bluetooth, which need little power. However, if you want to monitor the lock remotely, you'll need a hub or bridge of some sort. You may do this with one of the top smart home hubs, such as Samsung SmartThings, Amazon Echo, or Apple HomePod mini, but make sure the hub is compatible with the lock for doors.

Wi-Fi is increasingly being included into smart lock for doors, making it easy to link them to your home network. However, you may have to change their batteries more regularly as a result of this.
